Opportunity abounds in 2026 as the Northern Territory’s resources and energy industries go from strength to strength:
- The shut down of the Strait of Hormuz has created shockwaves around the world with regards to supplies for LNG, transport fuels, helium, plastics, fertilizer and a multitude of other commodities – creating new opportunities for project development in the Northern Territory
- The Beetaloo Basin is a total game changer for Australia with its’ potential as a transformative asset for the NT’s economy and a cornerstone of Australia’s energy security strategy with an estimated 200 years of gas supply. First gas is expected from September 2026 onwards from both Tamboran Resources and Beetaloo Energy. New gas pipeline/s are currently being constructed and additional ones proposed to bring this new gas to market.
- Santos has recently completed the giant Barossa gas project offshore Northern Australia, with the first of many cargos of LNG being exported to Japan in January 2026. Santos also has plans to drill and test new appraisal wells in the Beetaloo in 2026. There is also advance planning for a CCS Hub at Bayu-Undan in Timor Leste to link back to Darwin LNG
- INPEX has also recently announced a new farm in agreement with Daly Waters Energy to acquire stakes in the Beetaloo – bringing in a major new player to the NT onshore gas industry
- Woodside and Timor-Leste have just signed a co-operation agreement to advance technical and commercial studies for a Timor based LNG development utilising gas from the Greater Sunrise project
- The NT Government is advancing the Middle Arm Precinct, with a focus on low emission LNG, advance manufacturing, CCS, mineral processing and hydrogen
- The Northern Territory Government is also undertaking feasibility planning for the new ‘Territory Energy Link’ – a 670 km corridor from near Elliott to the proposed Middle Arm Precinct in Darwin. This significant corridor will support buried services including gas, water, optical fibre, hydrogen gas, and other services.
- Commodity prices are on a tear – particularly with gold and copper, and the major operating mines are undertaking further investment and new capacity to meet demand.
- Exciting developments are happening around the Tanami, Tennant Creek and Pine Creek regions with a number of new mines being developed and advanced. Exploration continues at pace across much of these areas, with promising success and opportunity.
- After many years in development Arafura has finally reached FID for the $2.2 billion Nolans Project, with construction tenders issued in the near future with work to being on site in September 2026
- Core Lithium has recommenced mining at its Finniss project near Darwin, with new plans to start work on an underground operation
- Primary Gold’s Mt Bundy project is on track to become the second largest gold mine in the Territory and the NT’s 10th operating mine
- The NT is quickly becoming a potential exciting destination for new digital infrastructure. There’s much industry interest in the development of new data centres to be powered by renewable energy. High speed fibre networks will further enable significant investment. The NT has world class potential to establish one of the world’s most preeminent data precincts in the Barkly region.
- Plans are being developed to create the $400 million Darwin Renewable Energy Hub which will include up to six new solar farms along with a significant battery storage system.
- Vopak has announced plans to fast track the development of the Middle Arm Co2 Terminal – a planned common user C02 import, storage and handling facility at Middle Arm
- Plans are progressing for INPEX’s proposed Bonaparte Carbon Capture and Storage Project at Middle Arm – a JV with TotalEnergies and Woodside Energy
With so much potential across a wide range of sectors this is your year to join the must attend gathering of the Northern resources industry in 2026
